Ambiguity is not your friend
It's been a time of great uncertainty but, as an older and much wiser business coach said to me in the early months of the pandemic, "Uncertainty is inevitable, we can't help uncertainty but we can help ambiguity." He added, "The worst thing to do is to layer ambiguity on top of uncertainty because then no-one knows where they are."
Wise words. So, what's the difference between uncertainty and ambiguity and why should we care?
Uncertainty is external - we all had plenty of experience of it over the months of the pandemic as the situation and changing responses meant many things felt totally up in the air.
In contrast, ambiguity is internally generated, it comes from us; it's a response to uncertainty which says, "Things aren't totally clear to me so I won't be clear with myself or others...".
It's so easy in the midst of uncertainty, to think there's no point in planning or deciding on things until they are clearer. But this is not a wise response. What we actually need in the face of uncertainty is flexible clarity. As you face uncertainty at work and elsewhere, make plans which leave room for necessary adjustments. Being clear and unambiguous in the face of uncertainty will not only help you but will help anyone who's relying on you and anyone who you are leading or supporting.
A couple of questions for you to consider "What are you currently being ambiguous about either to yourself or with others when it comes to your work or business?" and "What would being clearer and less ambiguous look like? How might that help both you and them?"
